Prohibited animal list needed for Australia

10:27 pm in Country Life by admin

The CRC chief executive, Andreas Glanznig, raised the issue that Australia needs to address a list of prohibited animals which were considered as potential pest animals like the silver fox in order to stop import applications.  However, his suggestion has since been vehemently opposed by National Farmers Federation, the Victorian Farmers Federation, the Victorian Agriculture Minister and RSPCA

The reasoning behind banning the import of such species is because they have a huge environmental costs as well as economic costs.  For instance, the red fox, which is of the same species as the silver fox is enlisted as one of the Key threatening process in the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act which impacts on 76 threatened native species and has an economic costs of $21.2 million to farmers in terms of loss productivity through predation of livestock.

The position of the CRC is that the EPBC should adopt a similar approach as the Quarantine Act whereby there is a list of plants which can be imported and those which are prohibited from the list owing to their devastating effects on local species.  By having such a list in the case of animals, this will prevent the importation of animals which is exposing Australia to the dangers of having these hybrid pets.
